One of two days of the week that I can hunt.
NEVER understood the Sunday ban on hunting that some states have.
When i am hunting that IS my church...i am closer to the creator sitting and admiring HIS creation than sitting in a damn building, made by humans, filled with humans...I would have to battle that all the way to the supremes... (hunting/fishing being my religon and all)

Yea, I don't see a need to ban hunting on Sundays, the majority of my hunting is done on Saturday and Sunday mornings......I never hunt a Sunday evening if I have to work on Monday. Just not enough time to track, drag and check the deer.

Call me stupid when it come to this but what is the arguement for not hunting on sundays? Is it only the religion factor or is there another reason(s)?
I voted YES, to me hunting on Sunday is Ok due to most hunters only have the weekend to hunt and they have spent money for lic. Myself I hunt on Sundays after I go to church. Gang if you check the Bible out you will find that God rested on the Sabath day which was Saturday, and man changed it to Sunday.

I have to vote yes. I realize that there are those who believe the Sunday is the sabbath and should be kept Holy, I respect their right to believe that. I also respect their right to not hunt/fish/swear/eat pork/drink alcohol/river dance or whatever else they don't think should be done on that day. I would never attempt to coerce them to take part in any activity that their beliefs say are verboten. It would be nice if I were afforded the same respect. Since I can only hunt AT MOST two days a week I'm not taking a Sunday off because someone in a (Insert religious building of choice) thinks it's wrong.
--Sidenote--If I want to buy a case of beer and have a couple of pints while I watch football on Sunday who the bloody hell are you to tell me I can't?!?!? No purchasing alcohol on Sunday is a mind numbingly stupid law that adds nothing to society.

Excellent point Tuck!! I thought that was the case but I'm not very smart so I was hoping someone else would validate that point.
Did I miss something? Is this even an issue that someone has proposed for Indiana?
It was just in the past couple years that Ohio lifted it's restriction on Sunday hunting. For a long time, all that you could hunt on Sundays was waterfowl.
If I missed where some jerkoff is proposing this for Indiana, then I apologize. I figured this was a non-issue for our state.
I'm 110% behind organized religion on Sundays. I'm 1010% behind allowing hunting on Sundays.:)

Breathe.....
The no hunting on Sunday law is real in some states. It does exist.
Jonsey, nobody, at least for the time being, is judging you for hunting on Sunday, for drinking on Sunday, or for watching the Patriots on Sunday either:evilsmile......well maybe that last one.
As for Sunday being the usually observed Christian Sabbath......
It is the way that we do it in our culture. It is how it has been done since Constantine made Christianity the only legal religion in the Holy Roman Empire. He change the day so that those that observed worship the sun god Solaris would switch over to Christianity. He found that they would switch but would also worship this god on Sunday. BTW this god's birthday is Dec. 25......same reason to observe this as Christ's B-day. The fathers of this country did not want the people to observe Christmas for this very reason, but when the Vatican allows it, the catholic church has Christmas services and parishoners go down the road. You begin to have Christmas services.
Another thing is that the Sabbath is on the 7th day..........was there a calander at that time????? Who's to say that Sat. is the actual Sabbath. It is as observed by the Jews and Seventh Day Adventist, but without a calander that dates back to day 1........you figure it out.

Sorry if I came across short (I normally do). I haven't even tried to buy beer on Sunday since my much younger days but I strongly disagree with the law, or rather, the spirit of it. Eric, we've had a couple excellent discussions about religion and I was really looking forward to your reply.
I was really hoping we could slide this into another Tom Brady v. Peyton Manning argument to get ready for football season :evilsmile:tongue::coolgleam

Is idolatry a religion?
Hunting can certainly become idolatry.
Idolatry is anything that I put before God.
What is being suggested here is certainly putting hunting before God.
The answer to the question is yes, so yes hunting is a religion when it becomes idolatry.
A religion that has nothing to do with God.
Before you guys frag me, remember that I voted yes.

When I went to Canada bear hunting there was no gun hunting on sundays but you could hunt with a bow. Maybe some states do it so as not to disturb people with the sounds of gun being shot? I voted yes because as many of you have posted, hunting can be a spiritual event or family event. In a fast-paced society any thing that brings people together for good times is needed.

Something to ponder....Why can't a person hunt on Sunday since they could fish on it?

I enjoy hunting very much but in no way would I put it in front of God.
I voted yes also.
the only thing my religon or church say is that the sabbath day is for rest, and no work. i believe hunting is relaxing and there for we should all have the right to hunt on Sundays. A little R&R
when was the calander that we use today invented? The world was not created by todays calander, and Sunday is the first day of the week, not the seventh so what was the origanal sabbath day?:evilsmile

I voted "yes" too. Luckily my church offers many other services then just Sunday morning so it isn't a choice between "hunting" and "worship". I make time to do both.
IMO, while there is NO denying the existance and beauty of what our Lord has create when watching/listening to the woods wake up on a cool fall morning perched high in a tree. It is still no replacement for being in his house and worshiping with a body of believers.
Jesus said, "Where two or more are gathered in my name, so I shall be also".
So huntnprayn, does that mean if I have a camera man in the tree with me, it's all good? :evilsmile Just kidding....but I couldn't resist! ;)

Jon,
Jesus does say exactly that, but go back and read it agian. It's Matthew 18:20 that you are quoting, but start up in verse 15 and then tell me what Jesus is talking about. If I go by the way that is commonly interpreted then I have to think that Jesus is not with me when I am alone. If I put the whole statement together I see that He is saying something entirely different.

Nice addition huntprayn, and you are right...often this quote is misconstrued if just reading verse 20 alone.
Thank you for the book reference. I know a lot of versus, just don't have the memory to remember where they came from! :(
Huntn....With all due respect...i just dont buy into the dogma of the "modern" church....More human blood has been spilled in "the name of god" than ANY other reason. Church and churches and organized religon is a HUMAN thing...made by humans for humans.
Having been indocrinated in the "reformed catholic" school of thought for 18 years (and seeing up close and personal hypocrosy at its best for over 30) i have had ENOUGH of man and his dogma. Not to mention being a (poor) student of history i am pretty well aware of the abuses of "the church".
You posted earlier of Idolitry...in my eyes worshiping a man on a cross IS idolitry....in that light, please, i beg, dont tell me i am an idolitor when i say that "hunting" is my religon...i feel closer to my god and my creator when admiring his creation than i do (or EVER have) sitting in a building full of humans. Humans that "believe" they can do anything (lie, cheat, steal, sodomize children, etc etc) and it will ALL be o.k. because some MAN ran his mouth during a time of war and occupation and was killed, brutally, by crusifiction for it....and that MARTYR will make all the evils you do go away....
Do I beleieve in God....a supreme being?!?! YES!!
Do i believe in MANS religions and the words MEN wrote and the punishments MEN say i will endure if i dont bow to them (mans ideals)?!?! NO!!
In other words i have NO faith in man...and if history is any indicator...i am right in THAT belief.
I try not to go into religion too much....gramps used to say (and from what i have seen its true) "dont argue religion with a man unless your prepared to shoot him!"...the reasoning is, ones religion is VERY personal...a person bases most of their life upon those beliefs and when challenging those beliefs things can become "testy" to say the least.
This is why i edited out my other post in an attempt to not stir up any animosity or bad feelings. Not everyone has the ability to debate such closley held beliefs. I want to hunt and fish. EVERY DAY!!
O.K. ................. INCOMING!!!!! :hide:
Are we ready for some FOOTBALL!!!???!!!!!! I would MUCH rather argue Dolts vs Dions.:biggrin:
by the way....any tickets out there for THAT game at Lucas Field!?!?!?:biggrin:
All arguing aside, back to my question from earlier. Why right now is the topic of hunting on Sundays even being discussed? Is there someone at the state level pushing hard to get this through? I'm curious if this is a REAL issue that we as sportsmen need to deal with right here and now. I consider myself to be pretty well up on current hunting issues, yet this bomb is a new one to me. I'm curious ... is this an issue in front of the state right now? Someone, please give us some insight on this.

Very good post. I can respect yours and anyone elses views on the subject. I can understand how a person from the background that you described would feel the way that you do. If you have not been IN the catholic church then you only know what has been reported about the abuses that you describe. That is me as well as many on here. I would argue that part of your views come from your experience in the catholic church. There are things that Martin Luther, Jean Calvin and other reformers fought for that opened the door for people to actually have a relationship with Christ and not be bogged down by the dogma of man. If one studies the differences between evangelical Christianity and catholic Christianity they will see that there is far less dogma in the protestant faith's; not always, but for the most part. For instance your own words tell me that you come from a catholic background, "worshiping a man on a cross." This is a common catholic principle; to worship the man on the cross. Notice that protestants that wear crosses usually do not have the man on them and that catholics that wear them wear the whole crucifix. The cross is just part of Jesus and not the whole. As a Christian, I can tollerate other faiths; I must. As a Christian, I cannot tell you that these faiths are right; I cannot. I stand by my post; anything put before God (and yes I, being a Christian, mean the triune God) is idolotry. We all do it at times.

I haven't seen anything on it Derek. I think that Brew might just be asking a question. Maybe spurned by the evolution thread.
DEC... Very good question...mayhaps we can find a better answer...again...i never understood the ban on sunday hunting...or alchohol purchase....hell, am at a loss for most "bans"
Huntn....thanks.....I am (or can be) pretty irreverent in the eyes of the church ("the book" teaches "questioning ones faith" is not only acceptable but expected)...and HAVE been "judged" by the same...but "the book" teaches ONLY "the creator" may judge......and i am sure i shall be.
Looking forward to a few "spirited" debates in the future....and mayhaps, together, some worshipping in "his cathedral" one day...
How 'bout them Dions?!?!?

My church is in the woods, my pew a deerstand, my choir the birds and squirrels, 'a la Emily...
"Some keep the Sabbath going to Church --
I keep it, staying at Home --
With a Bobolink for a Chorister --
And an Orchard, for a Dome --
Some keep the Sabbath in Surplice --
I just wear my Wings --
And instead of tolling the Bell, for Church,
Our little Sexton -- sings.
God preaches, a noted Clergyman --
And the sermon is never long,
So instead of getting to Heaven, at least --
I'm going, all along."
- Emily Dickinson
