My advice would be to buy a used custom for $300 if that's your budget.

..or tradgang.com or leatherwall off bowsite. I've bought a couple off there with good results. I bought my first one off ebay also, but it was one I knew I would like.

What you have to remember about traditional bowhunters, is that in some respects they are just like all other genres of outdoorsmen.

A hardcore bass fisherman would say you were wasting your time if you didn't have a $40,000 bass boat.

A hardcore flyfisherman would look down his nose at you if you didn't have a $1000 rod.

If a person has the $ and the passion to spend that kind of money on their sport--more power to them....but they shouldn't discourage or otherwise lead-astray a less experienced person asking for advice.

Bear archery has been making bows for more than 50 years. I've owned several. There are MANY Bear bows that are 30 + years old (including Grizzly's) that are still shooting today (check out EBAY).

You should check one out (maybe even shoot one, if you can find a dealer with a range.) If you like it, buy it and let 'er rip. It's about having fun and being outdoors making memories, not a snobby retail outdoorsman's version of a fashion show. Outdoorsmen in particular are very susceptible to being swayed by magazine and TV ads.

Buy the bow of your choice and shoot it a LOT. That Grizzly (if that's what you pick) will hit as good as anything else will in the hands of the right shooter. I'd go up against any of these guys with mine....;)

I say bring it grizz. Ill go up against you with my custom. Its like you said. The right bow in the hands of the right person makes all the difference. I am not a fan of the bear bows. Never really have been. My advice is shoot some different bows and try a bunch of them. I dont like production bows simply because the grips are made for the general publics hands. Im 6'3" 240 and have meat hooks for hands. My hands dont fit the bear grips very well and the martin bows are about the same. They dont have any curve in the handle. I say just keep shooting several different ones and try some different customs to find the one you like. If bear is the one you like then go for it.
Another place to try is pawn shops near rural areas. You might be able to find some old bears in there too. Let us know what you decide to get.
