CORUNNA - A muzzleloading rifle exploded, amputating a Rome City man's left hand, Tuesday at 12:15 p.m., DeKalb County Sheriff John Dennis said.

Kyle T. Inzer, 20, was attempting to shoot the muzzleloader behind a residence at 0047 C.R. 24, Corunna, near the DeKalb-Noble county line, according to investigators.

DeKalb EMS medics took Inzer to Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville. A Lutheran Air helicopter then flew him to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for treatment, the report said.

DeKalb County Police Deputy Aaron Long said the exploding weapon also injured Ben Tuffley when a piece of shrapnel struck him in the chin, causing a small cut. No address was available for Tuffley.

The rifle exploded because too much gunpowder was used, said Indiana Conservation Officer Rodney Clear.

“When Kyle fired the gun, the breech exploded and the barrel came off. The explosion amputated Kyle's left hand,” Long's police report said.

Police at the scene found only the stock of the weapon at first, but Indiana Conservation Officer Patrick Heidenreich later reported finding the gun's barrel, Dennis said.

Assisting in the investigation were Conservation Officer Andy Runyon and DeKalb County Police Sgt. Don Lauer and deputies Tim Rice and Rick Short. The Corunna Fire Department set up a landing zone for the helicopter, but it was diverted to Parkview Noble Hospital.

I am an avid Muzzleloader hunter and it never ceases to amaze me when things like this happen. I truly feel sorry for the all individuals involved but in most cases it is just ignorance. I cannot tell you how many times I have witnessed idiots pouring powder down the barrel straight from the container. No measuring!!?? I do not want to speculate on this incident but I have heard numerous other similiar events that have taken place. Some hunters are under the impression that muzzleloaders are safer than cartridge guns. This is a completley false since of logic. Muzzleloaders are 10X more dangerous than a regular cartridge loading gun. You are in a sense, "Manufacturing your own load". If it is not done properly by an individual who knows what he/she is doing it can be VERY dangerous!! I even know someone who used smokeless powder in an old Hawkin Smoke Pole. He did not die but did get his eye blown out of the socket by the backflash when the breech blew out. Beginning smoke pole hunters need to do a lot of research and studying before they attempt to hunt. Very sad story that could have been prevented. :banghead3

Just how much would it take of black powder to 'cut off your hand' & make the barrel disappear? triple charge? or was he thinkin he could use smokeless powder in which 1 charge would do it?

You are sooo correct. Not realizing you have a controlled explosion inside the barrel can be a big mistake. Overloading the weapon is truly a recipe for disaster.

Why do they have directions with muzzleloader is you don't use them. People think that the barrel is thick enough that you can over load them or put a cap on before you put the power. STUPID is what STUPID does.
