Had a blast at Hovey. Here's how we do it. Most of Hovey Lake is only 7 feet deep. We still haven't found a deeper spot but there's so much water there, I don't know if we'll cover it all with a trolling motor. Anyway, I use my fish finder and just locate larger fish that seem to be holding 4 to 6 feet down. You have to keep your minnow off of the bottom. Use a bobber and send the minnow to battle 4 to 5 feet down. We've been doing great there all summer. We've caught most of our catfish in seven feet of water near the middle of the lake. It seems strange but it's working! Give Hovey Lake in Mt. Vernon, Indiana a try for catfish, you'll have a great time.

Back during the Super Bowl, I saw a commercial. I know, go figure. This one, however, caught my imagination rather than my eye. It was for a contest on the Discovery Channel called "Fan vs Wild". 4 entrants would be selected to compete in a series of "survival" challenges, and the winner will be featured in an episode of Man vs Wild. I had to enter! And I did!

The entry form was pretty straight forward....name, age, e-mail, disclaimer statement. The usual. Plus, 2 essay entries. 300 words to convince them that I'm the kind of outdoorsman that can go the distance with Bear. And 300 words to convince them that I'm interesting enough to put on TV. "Tell us about your adventures." Man, what a deflating sentence. I'm not a marathon mountain biker, or an Alaskan Kodiak bear wrestler, or even a Georgia Bigfoot tracker. I'm just a middle aged outdoorsman from central Indiana. Don't get me wrong, I've done some things in my day. but I certainly wouldn't call myself an Adventurer. I don't remember what I wrote, but I filled it all in, and clicked "SUBMIT". Now I'm waiting to hear my call to fame.

I'm fairly certain they won't call me. It'll be four 20-something studs with long flowing blond locks, and washboard abs who free dive the Marianas Trench. And I'm OK with that. I just didn't want this to be another one of those times I'll look back on and say "I wish I hadda..." I'm also using this opportunity as incentive to finally work a little harder at shaping back up. I had a scare in February, and if trying to be ready for Bear helps to make me healthier, it was worth the time to enter.

My greatest fear is that they WILL call. Then what? I'll give it my best shot, and what happens happens. And I'll love every miserable minute of it. And if they don't I'll sit in my recliner with a cold beer and grouse about how much better I could have done. It's a Win-Win proposition.

Recent update: The gate was opened, but not removed as was required by driectives of the County Attorney. Followiing the gate opening, An adjecent land owner, belived to be the person who actually constructed and installed the gate, dug out the creek crossing such that no vehicle could pass, nor a hunter could cross without hip boots, and then placed a very large tree trunk across the National Forest road way directly above the creek. Thus keeping the National Forest closed to any hunters.
Hear-say, has it that these land owner, who control all the property incirculing the National Forest have made arrangements to lease out their adjecent property to out or state hunters. I have been personnaly told by other residents that this is true, but I have no direct proof.
I have taken pictures of the obstructions and forwarded them to the National Forest officials and again pleading for them to inforce the law. :banghead3
I respectfully ask all our Indiana hunters to take an interest in this effort to keep our public land open. Is there anyone out there who will stand with me.?

We all have that one event, date, or sign that signals the end of winter and the "official" start of spring. Sandhills in the air, cardinals calling from the tree out front, and temps above freezing all tell me that it's coming, but spring starts the day I pull my fishing rods out of storage and respool them! Spring started Wednesday. There is nothing like a freshly spooled reel, a freshly tied knot, to give a sportsman hope for the new year.

Today, I'll pull out the tackle boxes and take inventory. I'm sure I"ll find that I have just enough to outfit that first trip to the river which will probably have to happen this weekend. I'm equally sure I'll find that I need more stuff. I always do.

Hoorah for Spring. The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and my reels are spooled!

In September of 1972, a young boy and his Dad attended an evening meeting in the school cafeteria. The boy wanted to be a Cub Scout. The Pack needed leaders, so at the end of the night, both the boy and his Dad started a journey together that would span decades.

I'm not sure that either of us knew that night just what we were getting ourselves into. Den Meetings, Pack Meetings, Day Camp and Pinewood Derby races. Summer Camp, Order of the Arrow, and Woodbadge. There was so much to do, so many opportunities. We both loved it. Scouting became a family affair. As my 4 brothers came of age, they joined. My Mother even got into the act, and 30 years later she is still involved. As we grew older, the opportunities expanded. We boys all made the trip to Philmont, the High Adventure base in New Mexico, and all 5 achieved the Eagle Scout rank. And thru it all, our parents and other committed adults shared and facilitated our success. Eventually, my sons became Scouts. And like my father, I volunteered my time and talents. I cherish my time in Scouts. I'm sure there are many here do, too.

Our experience is not unique. Over the years, Scouting has provided untold boys an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, to learn new skills, and to develop character. Scouts have been Presidents, astronauts, leaders of industry and the good solid men that make every community work. Scouting, some would argue, is a cornerstone organization that shapes the leaders of tomorrow.

This month marks the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in America. Over the past Century untold numbers of young men have worn the green uniform. Untold moms and dads have given their time not only to their own kids, but to all of the kids in their community.

If you were a scout, take a moment to remember the great times you had. If you were a Leader, Thanks. You made a difference to someone.

Happy Birthday, BSA. And here's to another Century of service to the youth of America.

I am disappointed that some land owners are attempting to block access to our Hoosier National forest hunting areas.

Currently I am in dispute with nasty situation in Perry County concerning a landowner who has placed a steel gate and barbed wire across a public access near Derby In.

Have complained to the state and local National Forest Offices in Tell City and Bedford. National Forest officials tell me that they are working on the issue. Lost access to a very large National Forest area during this hunting season due to this illegal closer.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, and what can we do as group to keep access to our shrinking public hunting areas.

I will update this post with the further information on how this situation is being handled by the state and national forest officials. Let’s keep our public areas open to all of us.
