Tippecanoe County

I am in the process of moving to Tippecanoe County and my family owns about 10 wooded acres that is connected to a larger block of woods, I would estimate it to be about 200 acres. All located near the Wabash river near the Ravens Golf Course in West Lafayette. Can anyone tell me anything about the type of deer in this area? I am used to hunting in Concordia Parish Louisiana and I was just wondering if the size of bucks were comparable. Thank you for any feed back.

Whitetail

The deer of the Midwest are the biggest whitetail deer that you'll find anywhere across the United States. Many will reach over the 200lbs mark. I have seen some deer in Louisiana and I can also tell you the racks of the deer will be bigger and thicker.

You must be thinking of Ohio and Illinois. You can't put Indiana in that mix! ..........

That part of tippecanoe county is excellent for deer and turkey hunting, the river bottoms down that way have produced some very nice bucks.Consider yourself lucky if you bow hunt too, because that portion of tippe county is also an Urban Zone, meaning another chance at a buck. Back in the day we use to run trot lines down near black rock (just a couple miles past ross hills camp )and did good on flathead and channel catfish, hope that helps.....size of bucks along that river are Pope and young/boone and crocket bucks fer sure....

BUCKHNTR:
Not to seem disrespectful, however, Concordia Parish Louisiana is one of the top producing counties in the nation for B&C, at least according to this past Buckmasters issue. In the area we hunt, our 4.5yr olds average 135-140 but some as high as 160 and weigh anywhere from 200-220lbs. The heaviest buck killed weighed 260lbs. However, this is private land with food plots and a deer managment program.

Tilesetter:
Thank you for your information. I have seen some 2.5yr old bucks in velvet a couple of weeks ago just walking and they were pretty nice. I assumed there would be some nice bucks in this area but I was not to sure. Also, that is great news about the bow hunting as there are several houses around with children so I will be using one. I have always heard if I ever pick up a bow i'll never put it down. I hope that is the case. Any suggestions on a bow for a new bow hunter? I know that Matthews are great but pretty expensive. I appreciate all advice. Thank you.

No matter what bow you end up with, it needs to be QUALITY, and with that comes an expense.. Dead End archery, Hill top archery, Arrows 3 are good bow shops around the tippecanoe area, you need to be able to shoot several different kinds of bows to make the decision on what to buy....I have an Oneida and a Matthews Switchback.....

Hi KKing, my brother and I used to hunt that area by the granville bridge. I will tell you straight up that you will have problems with people hunting your land. There are more poachers in that area of tippecanoe county than all the others combined. There have been some big bucks taken from that area, i know of a couple of 190s and 180 class deer taken. My twin brother has a 160 taken from that area. If you want a good bow shop i would suggest Dead end archery, i dont realy care for Hilltop or arrows three. If you want to talk and try to get more land to hunt than call my brothers house 765-838-1522. My name is Terry and his is Jerry.

Terry, thank you for the information and the offer. Once I find out if I get the job and get settled in i'll definitly give you two a call. I have been hearing a lot of good things about the area I am hopefully moving to. Thanks for the heads up on the pochers too, i'll definitly keep my camera out and locked down. Thanks again, Kyle.

I would say an average 4.5 year old indiana whitetail weights around 260 on the hoof. That would put it about 215 dressed, which is typical for a big bodied deer around here. Antler scores will be all over the place as genetics vary greatly. FWIW, I shot a 300 pounder last year about 40 miles north of where you'll be hunting. No food plots and no management practices in the area I was hunting; just plenty of bean and corn fields.

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't think that there would be much need for a food plot because of the abundance of corn and bean fields, which will be easier on the hunter. Also, it will be a different experience hunting small blocks of woods in stead a large block. Hope I can make the adustment.

im gonna have to agree with TJ totally on the be prepared for trespassers. I dont like to far fromt he area your talking about and that area is just loaded with trespassers and poachers. I could name a few to start you off but i wont go there. First thing you need to do is get started on keeping people out and be serious about it to the fullest because if not people wont take it serious. But you are in a great area down there and there are many big deer running that area and tons of turkey. But with all the trespassers it makes it a little harder down there because they have had alot of pressure on them. But best of luck and hope all goes well

You know what they say about hunting the river bottoms, anyone can hunt it. I dont like that saying at all. If its not your property to hunt then stay out. Seems you have experienced the same thing.

Introducing my 7 year old son

In the last 2 years I have become obsessed with the awesome sport of whitetail deer hunting and harvested 4 last year hunting all the seasons and 2 the year before when I first started during firearms but haven't harvested or seen any while I have taken my son afield. He lived in Lafayette with his Mom and I visit with him up there most Wednesday afternoon/evenings and would love to find a place to take him to see deer and to possibly have a shot opportunity on a doe for the freezer to get him really excited about this great sport. I got a doe on 10-2 this season but my spots in putnam and hendricks counties have been like gohst towns recently. If anyone has a plce I can take him afield in the Lafayette area we would be very appreciative and would like to somehow return the favor.
Thanks,
God Bless
Danny Williams Jr.
