If you want to go cheaper then a zink power hen PH-2 in poly is a pretty easy call to blow and not too expensive. The one on Cabela's comes with an instructional DVD too and is only $29.99. Here's a link:

Call up Bobby Hayes in KS of Ducklandercalls. Grab a short barrel and a troublemaker, both under the $45 dollar range & are great little calls. If those dont fit ya, I recommend contacting one of our own, Spike78 on here. Makes one SWEET duck call.

Go to your local Rural King and get a buck gardner call. They are very good calls and less than 40 bucks usually

You don't need to spend a lot. Yes you can and often when you step up to some hire levels of calls, they will allow you to do more things with them. But for a beginner it is not needed. I agree with what John posted. There are a lot of $20 calls out there that make a basic quack. Probably one of the most basic and best sounding inexpensive calls out there is a Haydel DR-85. Both of my daughters have them and even they can sound like a duck most days. For under $20 it is a heck of a call. Not pretty so look at, but they sound like a duck and that is all that you need.

These guys all nailed it. My 6yr old daughter called her 14 yr old brothers first mallard in this season with the Buck Gardner call she got at the Delta Waterfowl dinner.

Duck Commander "ole Raspy" is about the easiest call I've ever blown. That said the call isn't gonna sound like it should unless you practice. I'm not talking about picking it up here or there and blowing, go down to the pond and listen to real ducks during the summer. It's gonna take some time but when you turn your first flock of greenheads it will all be worth it. No need to go spend a lot of money on a call, they tend to be to difficult for a beginner anyway. "ole Raspy" cost about $12 and it's worth it's weight in gold.

DR-85 been blowing one for abut 8 years now, can't go wrong as it is easy to blow and sounds good and ducky. Here is a tip if you get it though, DO NOT SMELL IT!!!

i thought it was just mine, wondered what i'd eaten before running it and putting it down for a week. i had to go so far as pouring some scope in it and shaking it up. thanks for putting my oral hygiene fears to rest, duff!

Careful, it can be just like buying lures!

I have tried out several of the $12-$24 range, and ended up with the Buck Gardner Double Nasty II (double reed), Primos Phat Lady (single reed), Knight & Hale Double Cluck Plus (squakin' Geese...oh yeah!), and a Primos High Roller (roller whistle) on my lanyard.

One that sits on the computer desk, but rocks for high and low pitch quacks is the Primos Original Wench. I often struggle with taking that one out with me or not, because it's pretty ducky and easy to use.

If you can buy a set with a CD/DVD, it really is helpful for beginners like me.

No need to spend $50 on one, when you can buy a couple styles for the same amount.

Yea I did the same thing. I was like, "WHoa that's nasty". I thought I had puked into the call.

I've used a Buck Gardner "Double Nasty", a Primos double reed call and both have worked well. You can buy those calls for around $20.00 and you can find them just about anywhere. Same goes for the Haydel calls.

Once you've "mastered" those, then you may want to think about a more expensive call, but be forwarned, once you go that route, there goes your discretionary income.
