Do You Have a Job?

Unemployment is in the raising and I'm just wondering, if you lost your job, how can you handle the passion for the guns and hunting?

I hate to sell my stuff but I had to get rid of a couple of shotguns just to pay some bills and I was worried about hunting season, I was uncertain if I was going to be able to purchase my hunting license but now that I just got a job, I might have enough money for this upcoming season

I have a full time job that is as safe now as I can reasonably expect. The problem is that it is in an industry that is VERY suceptible to economic swings. Right now, trailer building is suffering like it never has before. I'm working, but there are no promises for next year, or next month. That's why I have a part time job at Walmart, and I work light construction in addition to that.

Even Walmart is feeling the pinch. Hours being cut, job openings not being filled right away.

My wife works a full time job at Purdue, so that part of our income is pretty secure. I work way too much, so there is $$$ coming in even in tough times. I just worry how bad it is going to be. If times get tougher, buying that second deer tag may become a luxury I can't afford.

I have been in this position before. The biggest lesson i learned is to NOT sell the guns! Food on the table and protection are NOT luxury items!

Tags can become a burden but the meat on the table is (can be) worth more than the price of a tag.

With the current price (and shotages) of ammo it could be a very hard and lean season ahead. Practice time is and has been seriously reduced.

i work for an environmental company and we are really busy. we are growing in sales even with the economy being tough. i sometimes complain about working alot of hours and being out of town but then i think that at least we are going in the opposite direction unlike most companies.

I've been w/ the railroad for 3 years now and feel reasonably secure, but like most companies we still feel the effects. I sure have to agree w/ NOT selling guns. They are hard to replace and when you don't have $$$ to put food on the table that 'ol shotgun still will. Sometimes you have no choice, but selling guns will be my very last option. When I get a few dollars here and there I go and pick up some .22 and 12 ga. ammo just for "insurance" purposes.

Late last year and early this year I was worried that I might be unemployed this year and have a handicapped license plate. Thankfully, my back surgery went better than expected and restored use of my left leg. I'm quite lucky that my employer has let me come back in a light duty role (if such a position exists in the landscaping buisness). I still have about 8 months of recovery to go, but have been feeling pretty good the last 6 weeks or so. Doc says give up landscaping if I want to stay out of the hospital, but I don't think that now is the time to look for a career change.
If your buddy is in a bad way, pick him up, buy his tag, fix him up and take him with you. That's just what a good sportsman does.

I'm laid off, but haven't sold a thing. I worked in an auto supply factory and needless to say we got hit hard. I had only been there a year so of course i was one of the first to go. Eventually though they laid off people who had 15 years of service or more. I felt especially bad for those people because that factory is all they know. Thankfully for us, we had just got both our vehicles paid off, so the main big bill we have every month is the house payment. My wife also has a good job as an RN in the OB at the hospital, so we are able to make it. I've played the role of Mr. Mom for the time being watching over the 2 kids, taking one to preschool, tball, etc. So that part of it has been nice, i get to spend some time with my kids instead of dropping them off at an expensive daycare, there are days however when they drive me nuts. I don't look to ever be called back, and the job opportunities here are terrible, there is even talk of laying off 10 firemen here. My wife also teaches nursing classes at Ivy Tech so i plan to enroll back there and i have heard i get a discount since my wife works there, haven't verified that though yet.

Thanks for the comment/encouragement. Hearing the same advise from others. A buddy of mine, the same age as myself (48), just got his degree. Expecting to have my current restrictions lifted at the end of September and my medical expenses paid off by the end of the year. Hoping 2010 will be my year of change, or at least the beginning.
