I received a Hummin Bird Smartcast RF-30 (wrist watch style) fish finder for Christmas, and overall I\'ve been really impressed with it. The instructions say that it\'s not intended for use while Ice Fishing, but I tried it any way. I was amazed with the units performance! We used it in the shanty where the holes don\'t ice up and it worked like a charm! comperable to other portable fish-finders around us. (ok not as sensitive as the Vex, but hey lets compare apples to apples okay?) It detected fish, depth and bottom structure. Practically everything you want in a fish locator.
Quirks: When we tried it outside the shanty, (when sinking a new hole) it was less friendly. When the sonar unit (Duck) gets cold the readings become sporadic, and the display will read 0 depth, and nothing else will be displayed. But that is probably why the manufacturer states that it was not intended for Ice fishing.
Solution: My son decided to keep the \"Duck\" in his breast pocket while drilling new holes to keep it warm, and shazam! She worked like a charm that is until the \"Duck\" got cold again, which was approximately 5 minutes.
Overall, we like it, and look forward to using it on the river Steelheading next fall, I think if used within the operating climates suggested by Hummin Bird, for the price this little unit is A-Okay.

I bought this product because i have no boat and have no fish finder. So i thought i would really be able to use it in the ponds i fished at. ( from the bank.) I was wrong i would cast the smartcast and it would read nothing until it got really close to me. I was not satisfied with this product. I would save my money and buy a real fish finder.

Pros:

Works pretty good for me(shore fishing)
|
|
Cons:
|
You have to have a pole rigged up to cast the thing...

I suppose it could be better, but hey it was a wedding present from my buddy who knows I love fishin... I have the RF20 model actually but seems to work very well. I do mostly shore fishing, and sometimes a little aluminum boat in ponds, and it works great for me.
