In the previous blog we spoke about call types and sounds.
Today we need to expand on that knowledge and get more in depth.
Using the push button type of call is pretty self explanatory in that you do what the call describes and push a peg to make sound. There are many of these type calls on the market ranging from the open style described earlier to oval or egg shaped closed calls. Each is very easy to use, but is not the best sounding calls on the market. Can and do they work, in some cases yes they do. A rusty can and a power drill can sometimes work also.
The primary calls are the big three- Pot, Mouth and Box Calls. These are the proven turkey getters on the market. Remember don't get caught up in the commercial side of calls and think you have to have a kitchen sink full of items. As in fishing and other hunting sports the makers of calls also make calls to catch hunters not only the prey.

In the earlier discussion the simple design of the pot made it a good choice for beginning turkey hunters. It has also become the go to call for seasoned veterans of the spring woods. Another easy to use, versatile call is the box call. This call is normally a wooden call that is long and skinny with a wooden lid.
The lid has a convex bottom that when it strikes the side or sides of the base creates friction and produces a number of useful turkey sounds.
The proper way to hold the call is really up to you. Some hold it flat in their hands and others upside down and even vertically. The key is to find what works for you. Box calls are not super expensive and a good starter box can be found at your local hunting and fishing store for $20 or less. Some good name brand products include HS Strut, Primos and Bass Pro Shops Red Head brand. Really it is a good designed call and there are very few bad ones out there.
