nice bird! should be there still. the ones where i hunt seem to stay in the area. at one point we had 68 birds scratching around. fortunately turkey are the easiest game to hunt. your task will be to get that one in range before another one busts ya. lol good luck on getting that triple this season man! hope to see the pic of you holding him up.
Kinda new to turkey hunting, I have killed 2 in the past by sneaking up on them. My question is will this weather effect them by the time season gets here. I know indiana season is too late in the year, I didn't know if the lack of warm weather would help.
So, I am NOT a turkey hunter. As such I have considered leasing my place for the spring turkey season. My question is....because birds are few and far between in my area (though I have been seeing some recently) what would be a fair expectation of a hunter to lease ground for turkey hunting as far as seeing birds is concerned? To be honest a hunter more than likely will hear birds, but my 150 acres will not facilitate a run & gun sort of hunting style. Also consider 100 acres of my place is crop land. Hearing birds and seeing them and getting close enough to them on my place are all totally different things. Is leasing for the spring turkey hunt something even worthwhile based on what I describe? I am not even sure what I would charge, I am more concerned about the hunter feeling like he was treated fairly.....I am not out to screw anyone over.
Josh, I don’t think the weather will affect it much. The timing to me seems to be the same each year no matter what the weather does so I don’t think about it too much. My advice to you is scout your birds. If you watch them for a few days you will notice a pattern. Set up where the birds already wanna go from the roost and you increase your chances dramatically. Good luck to you this year.
J Bird you might be surprised. One of the properties I hunt is 100 acres. 80 acres or more of it is crop field. I killed a bird out of the field last year. Birds gotta eat lol. I wouldn’t be afraid to hunt a property like you describe. If there are birds close enough for hunters to hear then they are within calling distance. I can’t tell you what a fair price for a turkey lease is since I have never done a lease before. I would assume maybe take whatever an annual lease runs and divide it in half since you’re only allowing hunting for turkey?
The MI farm we hunt is nothing but fencerows and fields and one of our most productive IN farms is more like 20 acres woods and +-100 acres ag fields. With that said, I don't think it takes a bunch of woods to have a great spot. Not sure what I would charge for a lease. I think if someone could pull a gobbler or two, you should be able to get a few hundred out of the spring.
This weather has been crazy here. Counted 9 toms and 28 hens in a group yesterday evening in a field boardering one of our spots. It was something to watch. Running and chasing with strutting here and there, but still not separated. Few nice birds! With that said, I hope the birds are a bit more aggressive during the season this year. Last year it seemed like the birds were wore out by the time the season came around. Only one out of five birds I seen harvested was an all out fight with the decoy. Really miss the show!!
Thanks I appreciate the help!! I grew up duck hunting where scouting is everything, but turkeys are frustrating like no other. I have quit 3 times because of public land and no success. Hopefull this will be the year!!!
