Feb. Browns?

Anyone ever tried fishing for Browns in the big pond during the winter months? I was reading an indiana outdoor magazine today and read that Browns are very active during these times, especially in low light conditions and can be caught from shore. Anybody know of any spots that would allow shore access? A lot of the places have became rather strict due to the 911 event. I live about 2 hours south of the lake but would make the trip if i knew where to go. Thanks.

Hi Brad, I'm kind of out of the loop on shore access, but I'll give it a shot. I have seen many guys fishing the rockpiles at the mouth of Burns Ditch. Also they used to give passes out at the guard shack at Port of Indiana and allow fishermen only in the fishing area. A few guys used to go all the way back to the Bethlehem discharge which is off limits. This may have changed since 9/11. Another option used to be the Dean Mitchell plant. Park outside the guard gates, get a fishing pass, and walk a good mile to the discharge. I believe that plant is closed now.

Good luck in your search, and let us know what you find out.

The port has easy access to good salmon fishing from shore. I'll be out there in the next week, and will let you know what happens. Mik-Lurch bait & Tackle in Hammond usually has reliable fishing info.
What type of baits do you guys use to catch browns in the Port from shore?
