  1. Group offers pheasant hunt

    Tribune Correspondent

The St. Joseph County Pheasants Forever organization will host a free Youth Pheasant Hunt Oct. 14 at Maier Pheasant Farm near Bremen.

A similar hunt conducted in 2005 attracted one of the largest group of youth hunters in the state. This year, there will be two hunting groups, one from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and another from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants must be under 18 years old, have a youth hunting license, and have completed a hunter safety course. Participants must be accompanied by an adult and mothers are encouraged to attend.

Two pheasants will be placed in the field for each participant and dogs will be provided. Accompanying adult may shoot "back up" if the youth misses. Hunters are encouraged to bring their own guns.

In addition to the hunt, youths will attend workshops on survival training, gun safety and wildlife and habitat. Trap shooting will be provided at no charge and hunters will be taught how to clean the bird.

Youth shotguns will be provided for those who don't have guns. Shooters are responsible for ammunition.

Deadline for registration is Oct. 10. Contact Peter Loomis (574) 621-4453 for details.
