hows your season going

i have had a great bow season. havent killed anything but ive seen some great nature stuff. ive had deer under me but not what ive been after. i caught a huge rack on my trail cam and it got to me. that trail cam has cost me a lot of meat harvesting time! lol im not a horn hunter by nature. i use deer as beef to feed family. but this deer really got under my skin. he has come withing 150yrd of me in the light but only close in the haze of predawn. lol

yesterday was the best deer hunting day of my life. i seen 5 low grade shooters before noon. several in range along with some does. deer were coming from everywhere. i used the call to play with some and turned several to me! i think im done holding out though. tuesday i mite just have to poke one for freezer. in my area they really get scarce after opening gun weekend. lots of hunters with smaller woodlots and massive fields, leads to extermination.

i havent seen one yote so far! thats great for around here. couple years ago i watched a mother fighting off a yote to protect here 2 fawn. sucks watching that at 200yrds with a bow in hand.

mushrooms have been really lean this fall. maybe with this rain they will pop. not even the puffballs that are abundant on our farm havent flushed good.

hows your sets been?

Owned a couple New England short barrel blk/blk 45/70s. The Remington rounds shot great out of them. Very accurate and smooth. I used a Bushnell banner turkey fixed 4 power scope on them with the turkey plex reticle. I killed several hogs with them too. I like how much quieter the gun was compared to higher velocity guns are. At 1300 ft per second out of the barrel it was definitely more like the sound of a 410 slug. I shot one buck through the top of the back into the dorsal aorta. Only shot that I had when I stopped him verbally. He was following a doe and I was in a tree. He stopped right underneath me and behind a triple growth tree like triplets. He was down wind and I took my shot. He hobbled down the edge of the Ozark mountain and went just out of my view and was done. It was a well placed shot with a bone crushing round.

Sounds like a great shot! I put my last two bucks down with the 350 legend ar one shot each. They weren’t particularly far, but a pass through the lungs and nicked the heart both times. Ran 20 yards and pulled up. Entrance and exit wounds both the size of a dime. For indiana, I can’t ask for more. Where I hunt, I can’t actually see far enough to use a bigger rifle caliber. Just no need. I’ll take it! Lol

Ya that tree shot was about 15 ft from the muzzle at the most. I'm not big on tree stands. I was only 7 ft off the ground at my feet level. Quick shot.

smoked some more deer logs like these last night.
I have always used casings. But yours look like they came out fine without them. Well done.

Good season for meat (2 in the wild, 2 in a state park hunt), not a great season for a buck. My buck tag went to a spike that I mistook for a doe. Antlers right in line with the ears. But hey, I have my venison for this next year.
Kentucky next weekend and hope to see a buck there.

Sounds like it’s going pretty well for you! Good luck in Kentucky! Remember to send some pics! Lol

they arent as strong as casings by any means but they hold pretty well. as i stated i use some liquid binder. i dont use pork usually so i have to grind the deer meat at least 3 times to get it to hold together well enough to slice. grind up enough to try a log and see if you like the results.

i did some the size of hot dogs this last time. now those are great for snacking. ill be making a pile of those instead next time. they didnt last 3 days around here. lol

Was finally able to put one in the freezer the last weekend of firearm season. I still have an antlerless tag and an archery tag, but plan on getting the dogs out more now. Until I get a deer, I will spend the time in the stand, and the pups sit at home.

We did some rabbit hunting saturday, Deer Creek FWA and private land near Bainbridge. Not one rabbit, the young dog opened a couple of times, but nothing ran. Still a good day out.

Running dogs is always a good day! I’m switching over to birds. Mostly pheasant farms due to our lack of wild stock. And trapping, got a few sets out last Sunday. I’ll spend this weekend finishing putting in the line. That’ll keep me plenty busy until end of January!
Yea, a couple of the kids, I say kids they're 27 or so, are buying quail and putting them out on private land. Have seen/heard a few, but haven't started hunting them.
Funny you mentioned the trapping, i just ordered tanning solution 15 minutes ago, to work on muskrat I have.
People complain about winter and the cold, but I think it goes by extremely quick. When you're worried about running out of time to deer hunt, then rabbits, and hoping all the time for some serious cold and hard water for some ice fishing. Next thing you know, bang it's mushroom/turkey season.
You are not wrong there! Personally, I enjoy the cold seasons. Gives a nice variety. As for the quail, I tried for 5 straight years to release quail and pheasants, all I managed to do was feed the hawks! Lol

only thing i have against winter now days is snow. kills my back to shovel that stuff anymore. i love to ice fish so cold is my friend. lol i sure harvested a bunch of rabbits when it was 10* or less as a kid too! you could see them setting under the brush in the snow. they wont run when its that cold, so i used a 22 and head shot all them at like 6ft or less. wouldnt take long to get a limit.

i guess my deer season is over but you never know. the option still open this month yet. im thinking about poking a turkey but work has me strapped. id rather hunt spring when they talk to ya more.

the boy put out the decoy in gun season for 2 days. he lost confidence in it and didnt use it anymore. next year ill get him bow hunting and then he will see what it can do. lol he probably screwed up the first day when he just left it out mid day. he went back in afternoon and it was layin on its side! lol no telling what happened to it, though it was staked down. my guess is he educated a buck on its mid day run.

Those decoys can be great, or totally screw it up for you lol, looking forward to a few more birds and some fishing. I live far north, I may go hit the piers in Lake Michigan for steelhead and whitefish.
