  1. Hunters donate 50 deer to program to feed the poor

INDIANAPOLIS -- Southern Indiana hunters donated 50 deer to be used to feed the poor under a first-ever Department of Natural Resources program. That means an estimated 3,000 pounds of protein -- or about 12,000 quarter-pound servings -- will be shared among nine Indiana food banks. "All in all it was a great start," said Jane Avery, president of Feeding Indiana's Hungry, a network of food banks and food processors. "It shows that when public-private partnerships work together, it maximizes the resources to the hilt."
