  1. Editorial: Oh, deer, don't revive canned hunts

Our position: State legislators should support the ban on canned deer hunts.

INDIANAPOLIS - Hunters oppose it. The professionals who manage Indiana's natural resources oppose it. And if public comment can be taken as a gauge of popular opinion, then most Hoosiers oppose it. But the wretched practice of shooting captive deer confined to fenced hunting preserves -- banned by the state last year -- would be revived through legislation scheduled for review today by the House Natural Resources Committee. The panel is stocked with legislators who have supported canned-hunting measures in the past. Other committee members represent agricultural interests that have been favorable to fenced hunting. So opponents expect the bill to clear committee. But lawmakers who consider hunting a sport should uphold the Department of Natural Resources' ban and stop the legislation on the House floor.
