I went hunting this morning and the squirrels are all over the hickory nuts. I can't believe that their already in them this early. It is usually the second week on september before their in the hickory trees. I think its from the rain this spring and the cool weather now. Has anyone else witnessed this and why do you think this is. Good luck hunting everyone.

I went out Sat. mourning, lots of walnuts, and acorns, but no squirrels. I couldn't go to the hickory trees, someone got to them before me and was shooting like a fool.
When I got to the truck, I talked to him. He said he shot 4, and just let them lay till he was done, when he went to pick them up 2 where gone.

Yeah Man.... I don't like to shoot anything in the woods (gun) until the shotgun opener....... Besides, it's a blast when you hit, and a bitch when you miss..... I've went 40' up after an arrow...... Not anymore.... I just leave 'em. It can get pricey tho'....
You should try the Thumpers that I use. Just a little hard piece of rubber on the end of an arrow. always comes back down for me. It's pretty cool to watch a tree rat get knocked out of a tree and not shot out.:)

I've got 10 squirrels in the freezer so far this season. Just curious how you guys cook them. I usually flour and fry them like fried chicken and when done add a little water to the skillet and cover with a lid and steam them to improve tenderness. How do you prepare them?

I have only floured and fried, pretty much the same as my rabbits.
